HT Labs Measures: Philips 47PFL9732D LCD HDTV

Full-On/Full-Off Contrast Ratio—630:1; ANSI Contrast Ratio—493:1

Measured Resolution with the Leader LT-446:
480: 470 (per picture height)
720p: 720 (pph)
1080i: 1,080 (pph)

DC Restoration (poor, average, good, excellent): Excellent

Color Decoder (poor, average, good, excellent): Poor

Measured Color Points:
Red Color Point: x=0.651, y=0.323
Green Color Point: x=0.207, y=0.653
Blue Color Point: x=0.147, y=0.083

The top chart shows the 47PFL9732D's gray scale relative to its color temperature at various levels of intensity, or brightness (20 IRE is dark gray; 100 IRE is bright white). The gray scale as set by the factory, in the Warm color-temperature mode and the Movie picture mode, measures cool with the darkest images but fairly accurate across the rest of the gray scale. After making adjustments using the Photo Research PR-650, the peak remains in the low end, but the rest of the gray scale is closer to the accurate color temperature of D6500.

The bottom chart shows the gray scale (or color temperature) relative to the color points of the display's red, green, and blue color filters. These are off those specified by SMPTE. Red is slightly oversaturated and very slightly purplish-red. Green is very oversaturated and very bluish-green. Blue is somewhat greenish-blue.

After calibration, and using a full-field 100-IRE white (14.5 foot-lamberts) and a full-field 0-IRE black (0.023 ft-L), the contrast ratio was 630:1. Using a 16-box checkerboard pattern (ANSI contrast), the contrast ratio was 493:1. The best contrast ratio was achieved with the Light Sensor enabled, but with a piece of gaffer's tape covering the sensor itself. This allowed for a consistent black-level performance. A flashlight was shone into the sensor, and this achieved the brightest image of 55.04 ft-L and a black level of 0.121 ft-L. With the Light Sensor disabled in the menu, the best that we could achieve was 38.33 ft-L and 0.072 ft-L for a contrast ratio of 532:1.—GM
