The E3 Experience:
Title: Tabula Rasa Platform: PC Anticipated Release: When it’s done (hopefully end of the year) Tabula Rasa combines a massive multiplayer online role-playing game with a first-person shooter. The game takes place in an alien universe where the Bane are trying to wipe out the Allied Free Sentients. There are two main types of locations where the fighting takes place. As more MMO’s are doing, there are instanced areas that accommodate either a single player or a group. The instances are scaled in difficulty depending on how many characters, and what level, enter the instance.
The second type of area is the shared battlefield. Players of all levels can enter a shared battlefield to help their side’s cause. The battlefields have different goals and, as in an instance, you can choose to work alone or in a group. A nice bonus being included is integrated voice chat. So, there’s no more messing around with third-party clients and having to set up an external server to host events. Click here for more Tabula Rasa screenshots.
Title: World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade The Burning Crusade is the first expansion-pack release for the unbelievably popular MMORPG World of Warcraft. The expansion will include two new races—the Blood Elves and the Draenei, which were announced at E3—brand new areas to explore, new instanced dungeons, a raised level cap to 70 and a new profession—jewelcrafting. Being a Warcrack junky myself, I have been eagerly anticipating this expansion since last year. There actually isn’t any change in gameplay or graphics—it’s just a boatload of added content.
Honorable Mention
Title: Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar If any game will have the ability to unseat Warcraft from its throne, Shadows of Angmar is that game. With an already existing and rabid fan base from Tolkien’s books and Peter Jackson’s movie interpretations, Lord of the Rings Online is sure to bolt out of the starting gate come the holiday season.
Title: The Darkness From the creators of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, comes The Darkness, based on the comic book of the same name. You play a mafia hit man who occasionally gets possessed by the Darkness, giving you amazingly brutal powers such as the ability to lift police cars and swing them around to clear your path. The Darkness will show off the processing power and graphics of the PS3.
Title: Guild Wars: Factions Factions is the stand-alone expansion pack to Guild Wars, which was released a year ago. Factions has a few added features to the original, including large-scale strategic PvP battles over important resource points. There are also 300 new skills, 100 new creatures and pets as well as plenty of new missions—both standalone and story-based—to keep you busy. ArenaNet plans to release a standalone expansion every six months. Oh yeah, this MMO doesn’t have a monthly subscription fee to play. Just the original cost of the game. Keep an eye out here for our upcoming review of Guild Wars: Factions, but until then here are more screenshots.
