Calibration
A calibration does not improve a display. It removes the gap between what the signal asked for and what the panel emitted, and it is bounded at every point by what the hardware can physically do.
Every reading is taken off the panel itself, in the light the room will actually have.

What calibration corrects
Not preference — the gap between what the signal specifies and what the panel emits.
Accuracy against showroom impact.
Spend on calibration after the room is dark, not before. -
Grayscale and gamma
Neutral through the range, and the curve that maps signal to light.
Shadow detail against apparent punch.
Spend on the curve that matches your light level. -
The meter
You cannot do this by eye; the eye adapts faster than it measures.
The cost of an instrument against guessing.
Spend on measurement, or on somebody who owns it. -
Modes and defaults
Shop settings are built to win under shop lighting.
Impact against intent.
Spend nothing: change the mode.
